A dramatic, high-contrast image capturing the raw power of a fresh volcanic eruption of the Sundhnúksgígar crater system, with molten lava surging from an incandescent vent. The brilliant orange flow cools into a fractal pattern across the dark, newly formed land, while smoke and flame paint the night sky in fiery hues.
After nearly 800 years of dormancy, volcanic activity returned to Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula in 2021. Since late 2023, the Sundhnúksgígar crater system has been part of a powerful new eruptive cycle marked by repeated magma intrusions, earthquakes, and fissure eruptions. The July 2025 eruption belongs to this rare reawakening, where molten lava continues to form entirely new land in real time.
